Basic Membership

Standard of Basic Membership

This is the basic professional level for those undertaking translation in a range of general subject areas and, on occasion, more specialised work. The standard expected is that of a translator at the beginning of his or her career who has been working under the supervision of an experienced translator for at least a year.

He or she is expected to be able to translate general reading material with few problems and should possess a general understanding of the cultural background of both languages.

Criteria for Basic Membership

Applicants for Basic Membership of the Association are required to sit the Association's examination(s). Two examinations, each of 1.5 hours (90 minutes) duration, are held within an examination session:

Paper One – Translation from English into Welsh
Paper Two – Translation from Welsh into English

The standard of any examination for Basic Membership set by the Association will ensure that the candidate has achieved an appropriate professional level in terms of meaning, register, syntax and accuracy. Examples of previous Examination Papers for Basic Membership can be accessed at www.welshtranslators.org.uk/english/ymaelodi/default.asp

Candidates are not required to achieve the pass mark in both papers before being accepted into membership of the Association. Candidates may choose to translate into either English or Wales, or both. If the candidate achieves the required pass mark and is accepted into membership of the Association, the Directory will indicate into which language the candidate is qualified to translate.
